AK-47, likewise called Kalashnikov Model 1947, Soviet attack rifle, conceivably the most broadly utilized shoulder weapon on the planet. The initials AK address Avtomat Kalashnikova, Russian for “programmed Kalashnikov,” for its planner, Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, who planned the acknowledged form of the weapon in 1947.
